Over 40 bodyboarders met for the hugely anticipated competition held by the Cornish Bodyboard Series. The grassroots event organised by Chris Webb and Dan Catten brought riders and spectators from all across the UK together at a warm and sunny Portreath beach, providing perfect conditions for a day of bodyboard fun.

Once checked in and the format of competition and judging criteria explained, everyone marked their respect with a minute’s silence for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reflection was then followed by a large round of applause and the event kicked off.

The Final consisted of Alex Winkworth, Jason Targtaglia, Jesse King and Derek Footit.
With clear defined peaks all four absolutely went for it. Winky keeping busy the entire 25 minutes catching some crazy peaks and rolling into the flats / dry sand to the amusement and applause of the crowd. Jason Targtaglia sitting away from the rest managed to sneak a good few waves, getting pitted and rolling out with some nice explosive riding for the conditions, it seemed he was in sync with the ocean.

Jesse King scored some sweet ones but the better scoring waves eluded him.. Derek Footit lined himself up for the solid wedgier peaks, picking off the side waves and launching some nice rolls and an ARS. One left swung in, he dropped super late into the pit and scooped up and out throwing a nice rollo to complete.

The Cornish Bodyboard Series held a Jnr competition. We decided to trial a Jnr amateur, (none sponsored riders), and a Jnr Pro (sponsored riders).

Excitement was high, so we got going with the Jnr amateur’s. The 1st heat saw Charlie Bourner, Dillon Wood, Ethan Footit and Ben Boddington drawn together. Ben and Ethan were quick to get going with a couple strong rides and progressed to the final. Charlie and Dillon just missed out.The 2nd heat saw George Beckinsale, Josh Laity, Ben Pearce and Jack Maylam drawn together. This saw Josh Laity and Jack Maylam progress to the final, unfortunately Ben and George just missed out.

The Jnr Amateur Final saw the waves picking up. Josh Laity came 4th, a bit unlucky really. He went for it but just didn’t make anything. 3rd place went to Ben Boddington. Ben surfed well, just unlucky with his wave selection. 2nd went to Ethan Footit. Ethan surfed solid, landing some big rolls but Jack Maylam won it with a nice backdoor barrel to roll.

The Cornish Bodyboard series held the DK event. We were blessed with 2/3ft peaks with a light offshore wind. After two 30 minute semi finals, the final consisted of Laurie Mccall, Jessie King, Brendon Van Rooyen and Alex Winkworth.

Brandon only had one wave of note, which was a backdoor barrel and was unlucky not to make it and finish 4th. Jessie’s luck seemed to have ran out and he struggled to get any waves to co-operate and finished 3rd. Alex had a nice cuttie to forward and his back up wave saw him pull a nice clean re entry to earn Alex 2nd place.

The win went to Laurie who surfed strong through the semi’s and continued into the final. Laurie picked of one of the bigger waves and landed a sweet floater. His 2nd wave saw Laurie ping a sweet reverse off the lip. With that the win was his!!
