Nomad Big Wave Awards – Winner
The winner of the Nomad Big Wave Awards was announced on the weekend, with Michael Novy taking out the prestigious 1st Place in the “Rider of Biggest Wave†category.
Amongst the submissions for the Biggest Wave included noted Big Wave riders Lewi Finnegan, Chris James, Sam Thomas, Davis Blackwell, Damien Martin, and Seamus McGoldrick.
Novy took out the competition with a massive keg at The Right in WA, towed in by fellow competitor Damien Martin. The footage was judged by a panel of experts, headed by world tour head judge Craig Hadden, along with some of bodyboardings most experienced and respected riders, Ben Player, Ryan Hardy, and Jase Finlay. Jase Finlay said of Novy’s winning wave:
“I think the line he draws from behind the peak is what sets Novy’s wave apart. That’s where everyone wants to be, but its almost the most risky. This place regularly dishes out 2-3wave hold downs, so with the amount of water and sheer size of this wave, it would easily be life threatening. For me this is the greatest ridden wave in the competition, i love it!”
Other winners of the event were Damien Martin for “Best Wipe Outâ€, for a horrific wipeout at The Right in WA, and James Strickland for “Filmer of Biggest Waveâ€.
